The training of safety engineers in Croatia has a long tradition and began long before in many European countries.

The Higher Technical School for Occupational Safety was forced to close in 1986 due to the reform of higher education institutions in Croatia, the intention of which was to assimilate and merge all independent higher schools with related faculties. It was then decided in the relevant ministry that the College for Occupational Safety be merged with the Faculty of Technology in Zagreb, where as a study VI. degree teaching in the study program Safety conducted only a few years.

In order to enable students who completed a two-year study at the Higher Technical School for Occupational Safety to continue their education in a four-year related study and acquire the title of graduate engineer, the company IPROZ – information, propaganda and development of protection from Zagreb organized enrollment at the Faculty of Chemistry and chemical technology, specialty Safety at work from Ljubljana. Classes for one generation of students were held in Zagreb.

The College of Safety (which still exists today) began operating in 1997 as a program successor to the Higher Technical School for Safety at Work under the auspices of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb.

Since the academic year 1997/98, the study has been conducted as a single study lasting four (4) years, eight (8) semesters, at the end of which the professional title was obtained – graduate safety engineer (bachelor’s degree) and university degree (recalculated 300 ECTS points).

Since the academic year 2001/02, the College of Security has also conducted a postgraduate professional study of security lasting one and a half years (1.5) or three (3) semesters, at the end of which the professional title – Master of Security (M.Sc.) was acquired. and 90 ECTS credits.

Since the academic year 2005/06, the study has been conducted at the undergraduate and specialist graduate professional study of security according to the Bologna model (3 + 2), upon completion of which the professional title – security and protection engineer (bac. Ing. Sec.), The first level of Bologna higher education and 180 ECTS credits, ie – professional specialist safety and protection engineer (expert spec. ing. sec.), second level of Bologna higher education and 120 ECTS credits (total 300 ECTS credits).

Apart from Zagreb, classes were held in dislocated centers in Pazin, Čakovec, Osijek and Split in Croatian and individually in English for foreign students in Zagreb.
