From Workplace to Safe Place

Violence at the Workplace

It is common to think of violence as a physical assault, but it is so much broader, and often much more subtle than that. Even discrimination that has been intertwined within the processes, structures and cultures we meet and become part of on a daily basis, could be defined as violent in its very own nature. Sexual harassment, spreading rumors, inadequate voice tone, verbal abuse or even working late – threats of violence come in all forms and colors one can imagine.

Interestingly enough, not all occupational groups are equally likely to be exposed to some forms of violent behaviors. Taxi drivers, police officers, nurses or administrative workers are dealing with lots of fury, anger and negative emotions by default – therefore they are at a greater risk of being abused. By setting the clear limitations of acceptable behaviors , as well as protocols in cases when things go wrong we are able to minimize the effects of possible violence, and make the workplace as safe as possible.

Equal Standards Application

Ignorance could become part of a company culture that is hard and time-consuming to eradicate. Therefore, safety and health specialists need to encourage detection and reporting of such unacceptable behaviors at the workplace, deepen the general consciousness of its presence and forms, as well as make sure that everyone understands the related protocols and consequences. The application of equal standards to all the levels of management and company structure, even to clients and external contractors is an efficient way to demonstrate integrity and dedication towards zero-tolerance of bullying.

Addressing the situations properly and promptly is a necessity before they grow into bigger issues. Also, not having double standards for those at the position of authority and power is essential to set up exemplary behavior instead (whether it is a school director, politician or a highly positioned manager). Remaining committed to violence prevention and early detection should be a long-lasting goal of both private companies and public bodies. Offering support to damaged ones and encouragement of taking the full responsibility for one’s actions are our common duty, to ensure same standards for all and make the workplace a pleasant and safe place to spend a big deal of our life at. It is in fact, our second home – and as such should be a secure, enjoyable and welcoming place.
