Mid-last week, our lecturer Dr. Mirsada Ćehić participated in a conference on occupational safety titled “Safe Construction Site,” organized by the Croatian Chamber of Economy in collaboration with the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction, and State Property on March 13, 2024, at the Croatian Chamber of Economy Hall in Zagreb.
As a panelist, Dr. Mirsada Ćehić emphasized the importance of education and the use of new technologies and digital tools through which workers can be interactively educated, with the possibility of translation into all languages to address the issues faced by foreign workers due to language barriers.
The conference discussed the obligations of both employers and workers regarding occupational safety, training workers for safe work practices, the importance of prevention to prevent or reduce workplace risks, monitoring the implementation of occupational safety, and how foreign workers cope and can be educated.
In addition to Dr. Mirsada Ćehić, who represented the Veleučilište studija sigurnosti as a lecturer, emphasizing the importance of education in occupational safety, the conference was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matej Mihić, President of the Croatian Association of Occupational Safety Coordinators and lecturer at VSS, and Sanjin Purić, a member of the VSS Economic Council, CEO of GP Krk, and President of the Construction Association.
It is essential to highlight that education is a crucial starting point and foundation for any action, especially concerning safety.
In 2022, there were 20 fatalities and 171 cases of severe injuries recorded at construction sites. These figures underscore the need for additional investment in worker education and safety to increase awareness of occupational safety.
